Helpful Tips & Substitutions
Can This Be Frozen?
Unfortunately, guacamole and freezers are not the best of friends. Avocado has a high water content, and freezing tends to alter its texture, leaving you with a less-than-appealing dip. For the best experience, savor your Grinch Guacamole fresh and avoid the chilly depths of the freezer.
Can This Be Made Ahead of Time?
Guacamole is at its prime when fresh so I recommend making this right before serving. But I understand needing to prepare this in advance for parties, I would only make it the evening before, not DAYS in advance. You have two options... First, you can make the guacamole the day before and have it ready to shape the whole board closer to serving it. If you use this method I recommend putting the guacamole in a bowl and adding a thin layer of water right on top of the guac then sealing it tightly with a lid. When you are ready to make the board, just remove the lid and pour out the water, then scrape off the thin top layer of the guac and discard. Second, you can make the entire platter and wrap tightly in plastic wrap, making sure not to squash the guac and make a mess of the face. It should be fine the next morning and not have browned much because of the lime fresh juice in the recipe.
Substitutions & Variations:
- Spicy Twist: If you're a spice enthusiast, toss in some finely chopped jalapeños for an extra kick. The Grinch might be green, but your guacamole can be as fiery as you like!
- Cheese Lover's Paradise: Sprinkle some crumbled feta or cotija cheese over the guacamole for a savory touch. The Grinch won't mind a little extra indulgence.
- Veggie Extravaganza: Get creative with your veggie decorations. Add diced bell peppers, shredded carrots, or even sliced radishes to enhance the festive colors.
Helpful Cooking Notes:
- Avocado Selection: Opt for ripe avocados that yield slightly to gentle pressure. If they're too firm, your guacamole might end up chunkier than intended.
- Lime Juice Magic: Lime juice not only adds zest but also helps prevent browning. Squeeze it directly onto the avocado to preserve that vibrant green color.
- Texture Preference: Mash the avocados to your liking. Some prefer a smooth guacamole, while others enjoy a chunkier texture. It's all about personal preference.
- Chips Galore: The right chips can take your Grinch Guacamole to the next level. Consider using holiday-colored tortilla chips or get creative with veggie sticks for a wholesome twist.
