Harry Potter Butterbeer Recipe

Ok, so I am a huge Harry Potter fan and after going to HP world and drinking an ice cold mug of butterbeer in the Florida heat, I had to figure out how to make it for myself!

I scoured the internet to find a recipe that I thought replicated the theme park version and I just couldn’t find one. Some called for ice cream…some were overly sweet (and that’s saying a lot because I drink sweet tea with breakfast)…and some just plain didn’t make sense.

The BEST Butterbeer Recipe

I’m happy to say that after tons of testing, I landed on the perfect recipe that is actually really easy and definitely gets you into the wizarding mood! If you love the flavors of cream soda and butterscotch, this is absolutely the drink for you.

With a frothy, homemade whipped topping and butterscotch sauce drizzled all over the top, you will feel like you are toasting mugs in the Three Broomsticks!

The flavors in this Homemade Butterbeer make this the perfect drink to serve all year long…whether you’re enjoying a midsummer HP binge, or whipping up a batch in the middle of fall! You can make a small servings for yourself anytime or a huge a punch bowl full for a Halloween party!

Whatever the occasion, know that this recipe feels as good going down as chocolate after dementor attack.

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE BUTTERBEER:

  1. Beat the heavy cream and powdered sugar together until soft peaks form. Then keep beating until you get a fluffy texture like pictured. Set this whipped cream aside.
  2. Make sure the Cream Soda is well chilled before starting. Pour about 1 cup into a large pitcher or punch bowl.
  3. Whisk in 5 Tablespoons of butterscotch topping and 2 Tablespoons of butter extract.
  4. Once this is well mixed, gradually stir in the remaining Cream Soda.
  5. Scoop the whipped cream on top in large dollops then drizzle on the butterscotch topping.

CAN I MAKE THIS HOMEMADE BUTTERBEER ALCOHOLIC?

If you want to go along the lines of a more adult route (we do this too) you will want to add 1 ounce of butterscotch schnapps and 1 ounce of vanilla vodka per serving.

WHAT IS BUTTER EXTRACT?

Butter extract is exactly what the name implies. It is an artificial butter flavoring that is used when you want to bring out the more butter flavor in recipes.

In this recipe, we use the butter extract because it adds the flavor needed for the drink itself. Do not try to add melted butter to this.

The butter will not incorporate and when melted butter hits cold liquid it tends to solidify. You can easily find Butter Extract at your local grocer such as Walmart.

CAN THIS BECOME A FROZEN DRINK?

Yes – there are 2 different methods that work. You can either put the Cream Soda in the freezer for a couple of hours before mixing in the ingredients (try to chill it just to slushy, if you freeze the Soda, it will lose its fizz.)

I like to gently tip the bottle back and forth every once in a while for it to become slushy more evenly.

The other method is to place a few cups of the Cream Soda/butterscotch/butter extract mixture into a freezer bag.  Remove all of the excess air.

Place this bag inside another freezer bag. Fill the outside freezer bag half-way full with ice cubes and add a Tablespoon of salt. Wrap all of this in a towel and then begin shaking and squeezing the bag. This will cause the drink to become slushy. This may take 5-10 minutes.

You will have to do it in batches, as you cannot fit all of the drink into the freezer bag.

CAN I STORE HOMEMADE BUTTERBEER?

I do not recommend storing this Butterbeer for long periods of time as the drink will lose its fizz. This is best drunk when it is first made.

EXPERT TIPS AND TRICKS:

  • This can become an adult beverage, see my tips above.
  • You can easily double this batch to serve more people, I would use a large punch bowl.
  • If you really love butterscotch you can flavor your whipped topping by adding 1/4 cup butterscotch topping and omitting the powdered sugar (it would make it overly sweet).
  • If you can’t find butterscotch topping, you can replace with caramel topping instead.
  • You can use store bought whipped topping instead of making homemade if you are in a rush.
