HOW TO MAKE COPYCAT KFC COLESLAW IN A BOWL
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, milk, buttermilk, granulated sugar, lemon juice, white vinegar, salt, and pepper. Whisk until smooth and well combined.
- Add the store-bought coleslaw mix to the bowl. Toss until all the cabbage mix is fully coated in the dressing.
- Cover the bowl with a lid or plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight. (if you can toss the coleslaw a bit while it chills, that helps keep the slaw coated evenly) This allows the cabbage to soak up the flavors of the dressing.
- Before serving, give the coleslaw a good stir to redistribute the dressing.
- Serve chilled, as a side dish with your favorite fried chicken or barbecue.
- This recipe is quick and easy to prepare and provides a delicious, homemade alternative to KFC’s coleslaw. Enjoy!
STORAGE NOTES:
- Your copycat KFC coleslaw can be made a day in advance and refrigerated. Just make sure you use an airtight container for storage, or cover the bowl with cling wrap.
- This coleslaw tastes best when served cold, not at room temperature.
- If you have any leftovers, you can refrigerate them for up to 3 days, not more than that.
HELPFUL TIPS & SUBSTITUTIONS:
What Can I Use Instead of Buttermilk?
The buttermilk is what lends the copycat KFC coleslaw its creaminess and tangy flavor. If you don’t have it, you can use whole milk with some extra lemon juice in the dressing to balance out the tanginess.
What Veggies Should I Use if I Don’t Have Coleslaw Mix?
If you don’t have the ready coleslaw mix that this recipe calls for, you can use chopped cabbage, some minced onion and shredded carrot.
Can I Prep the Copycat KFC Coleslaw?
You sure can! You can actually prep it the night before and refrigerate it overnight! Just make sure to give a stir every few hours if you can. Just remember to cover up the container with some plastic wrap or store it in an airtight container to keep it fresh.

NOTES
- This coleslaw only lasts a couple of days in the refrigerator. The water from the cabbage will begin to sweat and mix with the dressing and the colors from the purple cabbage will start to run so if you are making this for a get-together or just a family meal, I recommend only making it a day ahead of time!
