How to Make Caramel Apple Crack

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes
Servings: 8

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. Chop the Granny Smith apples into bite sized pieces. Place them in a bowl, pour the lemon juice over top and toss together until coated, this keeps the apples from browning. Set aside.
  3. Line a 12X18″ pan with foil. Lay out one layer of saltines on the pan and set it aside.
  4. Melt the butter and brown sugar together in a saucepan. Bring mixture to a rolling boil for 3 minutes while stirring continuously. The mixture will thicken and bubble as it caramelizes.
  5. Pour mixture over the crackers evenly and bake in the oven for 7 minutes.
  6. Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle the semi sweet chocolate chips over the hot toffee.
  7. As they melt, using an offset spatula, spread the chocolate like icing, until the whole surface is covered.
  8. Next sprinkle the green apple pieces and mini pretzels evenly over the warm chocolate.
  9. Heat the caramels in the microwave until melted according to the package instructions, about 30 seconds at a time.
  10.  Drizzle the caramel over the top of the apples and pretzels. *feel free to top with sea salt if you want even more of a salty/sweet flavor!*
  11. Place into the refrigerator to cool for about 30 minutes until set, then break off pieces and enjoy!

Storage and Reheating Instructions:

How to Store Caramel Apple Crack:

You’ve made a batch, and by some miracle, there are leftovers. Here’s how to store it:

Room temperature: It’s okay for a day in a sealed container. But let’s be honest, it probably won’t last that long.

Refrigerator: This is the best way to keep your caramel apple crack fresh. It will hold nicely for up to a week.

Helpful Tips & Substitutions

Can This Be Frozen?

Technically anything can be frozen but this is much better eaten fresh.

With such little prep and cook time I recommend whipping up this recipe anytime you’re in the mood for a treat.

Can This Be Made Ahead of Time?

You betcha! This treat is perfect to make a day or two before an event.

It might even taste better after the flavors meld a bit. Just remember to store it in the fridge.

Substitutions & Variations

I get it. Sometimes you want to shake things up a bit. So, here you go:

Apples: Prefer a different apple variety? Go for it! Honey crisp or even Red Delicious could work here.

Pretzels: How about trying some crushed peanut butter pretzels? Talk about a flavor explosion!

Chocolate: If semi-sweet isn’t your jam, milk chocolate or dark chocolate would be delicious substitutes.

Helpful Cooking Notes

Patience is key: Waiting for the mixture to boil and caramelize is essential. No shortcuts here!

Spread evenly: Ensure that the caramel mixture and melted chocolate cover the crackers completely. This ensures every bite is as heavenly as the last.

Microwave tip: When melting the caramels, make sure to use a microwave-safe bowl and stir after each 30-second interval.
