How to Make Chocolate Caramel Apple Slices

Prep Time: 25 minutes
Chilling Time: 25 Minutes
Total Time: 50 minutes
Servings: 8 servings (2 apple wedges each)

  1. Wash and pat dry the apples. Cut each apple in half, then each half into 4 wedges. Be sure to trim the core off each wedge and remove any seeds.
  2. Insert a wooden skewer or popsicle stick into the bottom of each apple slice. Place all the skewered apple wedges in a bowl and toss with apple juice so they don’t turn brown. Set aside.
  3. Place the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl or glass measuring cup.
  4. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth.
  5. Dip each apple slice into the chocolate, allowing any excess to drip off, and place on a parchment-lined tray. Place the chocolate covered apples in the refrigerator for 15 minutes to allow the chocolate to harden.
  6. Combine the caramel bits and heavy cream in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until the caramel is fully melted and smooth.
  7. After the chocolate is set, remove the apples from the refrigerator and drizzle the caramel sauce over the chocolate-covered apples. Sprinkle the chopped nuts over the caramel.
  8. Place the tray in the refrigerator for about 20 more minutes to allow the caramel to set.
  9. Once the chocolate and caramel have set, remove the tray from the refrigerator.Serve the chocolate turtle apple slices immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Storage and Reheating Instructions:

How to Store Chocolate Caramel Apple Slices:

Store your apple slices in an airtight container in the fridge. They’ll last for up to 3 days, although I’d be shocked if they stick around that long (they’re that good!).

Substitutions & Variations

Feeling Nutty?: While pecans are the nut of choice for that classic ‘turtle’ flavor, feel free to experiment! Walnuts or almonds can be a delightful alternative.

White Chocolate Fan?: For a different twist, swap out the semi-sweet chocolate chips for white chocolate.

Add Some Crunch: For an extra layer of texture, consider adding some crushed pretzels or graham cracker crumbs over the caramel before it sets.

Helpful Cooking Notes

Prevent Browning: Tossing the apple slices in lemon juice helps prevent them from browning. If you’re worried about the lemon flavor being too strong, water them down a bit.

Chopping Nuts: For a finer texture, you can give the pecans a whirl in the food processor. Just be sure not to turn them into powder – a little crunch is what you’re after!

Microwave Tip: When melting the chocolate or caramel, always go for shorter intervals and stir frequently. It ensures even melting and prevents burning.
